CECILIA SUÁREZ as M. CANDELARIA
Harper's Bazaar

This is a fashion project I did in 2001 for the Mexican edition of Harper's Bazaar. I tried to recreate the atmosphere of the Mexican film "Maria Candelaria" (1943) directed by Emlio "el Indio" Fernandez and photographed by the wonderful director of photography Gabriel Figueroa.
Actress Cecilia Suarez played Dolores del Rio.

The film won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1946. Gabriel Figueroa received an award for best cinematography at the same festival. At that time, Dolores del Río and Emilio Fernández starred in the film. We suggested that the well-known Mexican actress Cecilia Suárez and photographer Atonatiuh Bracho recreate some scenes inspired by the film, and we set up a one-day session in the same location where the film had been shot 68 years earlier. Luckily, it's an area southeast of Mexico City called Xochimilco that has remained virtually untouched because it's an area of special ecological and tourist interest, which has also been declared a World Heritage Site since 1987.
